A Family That Has Led One School for Nine Centuries

Most Tibetan Buddhist schools trace their leadership through a chain of recognized teachers, one gifted student handing authority to the next. The Sakya school has done something rarer: since its founding in 1073 by a member of the Khon family, its leadership has stayed inside that single family, passed from father to son and uncle to nephew for nine centuries and counting. This clay and gilded sculpture, made in the early seventeenth century, is a small piece of that long continuity made physical. It depicts a Khon family teacher the Smithsonian's own catalogue record identifies only as "possibly Kunga Tashi," dated 1344 to 1425, a hedge worth taking seriously rather than smoothing over into false certainty.

That the sculpture was made roughly two centuries after its subject lived is not a puzzle to be explained away. Commissioning a portrait image of an earlier lineage teacher long after his death was ordinary practice in Tibetan Buddhism, a way of keeping a shrine populated with the specific human faces of a transmission rather than only its doctrines. A worshipper standing before this image in the seventeenth century was not looking at a likeness taken from life. They were looking at their own tradition's memory of itself, rendered in clay so it could be looked at, prayed to and handed forward again.
