The sixth and topmost line closes the hexagram on a quieter note than the fifth line's hard won triumph. Legge's translation places this line's fellowship in the open country, away from the city, the clan, and the contest that occupied the lines beneath it, and states plainly that there is no cause for regret even though no great achievement is claimed here. After a hexagram built from an open gate, a narrowed clan, hidden weapons, an abandoned assault, and a union finally won through real difficulty, the topmost line settles for something more modest: an honest intent, unaccompanied by any of the drama the lines below it required.
This line occupies the top of the upper trigram Qian, farthest of all six positions from the sole yielding line at the second place that every other line has, in some fashion, sought. Having no realistic path to that center, the topmost line does not pretend to one. Its fellowship is sincere but distant, more wish than achievement, and the text's judgment reflects exactly that scale: no regret, because nothing false has been claimed, but no great fortune either, because nothing great has actually been accomplished.
Read as the hexagram's final word, the line offers a kind of modest peace after the drama that came before it. Not every fellowship must be won through tears and a great host. Some are simply held honestly, at a distance, and the text credits that honesty even where circumstance keeps it from becoming anything larger.
