Filming the Ascent Before the Fall

Most documentaries about a controversial group arrive after the fact, built from court transcripts, news footage and survivors speaking years later about something already over. The Vow is unusual because its footage begins while NXIVM was still functioning, filmed by Mark Vicente, one of its own senior members and a working filmmaker, years before he understood what he was documenting.

That accident of timing is what gives the series its particular value to anyone studying how a self-improvement movement can become something else entirely. Vicente and Sarah Edmondson, both of whom rose high enough inside NXIVM to see its internal workings clearly, narrate their own gradual recognition of what founder Keith Raniere's teaching actually demanded of the people closest to him, culminating in DOS, a secret internal sorority whose members were branded and held to blackmail material.

Directors Jehane Noujaim, Karim Amer and Omar Mullick made a deliberate choice not to open with scandal. The first hours instead show why intelligent, successful people found NXIVM's philosophy of radical honesty and self-actualization genuinely persuasive, a structure that has drawn some criticism for withholding the darkest material too long, but which makes the eventual turn considerably harder to dismiss as simple gullibility. Raniere was convicted in 2019 on racketeering, sex trafficking and related counts; the series that aired the following year is not an account of that trial so much as an account of how two of his own followers came to testify against him.
