How the Filtration Cone Works
A filtration cone works by mechanical straining: a piece of cloth or paper is folded or sewn into a cone shape, wide at the top and narrowing to a point, and set inside a funnel or held over the mouth of a receiving vessel. The liquid to be clarified is poured in at the wide top, and as it works its way down through the cone toward the narrow point, it has to pass through the weave of the cloth or the fibers of the paper, which are fine enough to let the liquid itself through but too fine for solid particles above a certain size to pass. Those particles, whether sediment, undissolved solid, or plant matter left over from an extraction, are caught inside the cone while the liquid drips clear out of the point below into a waiting vessel.
The finer the weave or the paper, the smaller the particles the cone could catch, which let an operator choose a coarser cloth for a quick, rough clarification or a tighter weave for a liquid that needed to come out visibly clear. Because the cone shape concentrates the flow toward one narrow point, it also let an operator control the rate of filtration by how much liquid was poured in at once, a plain but genuinely effective piece of engineering built from nothing more than cloth and gravity.
