Small Shrines at the Edge of the Road

Where Folk Shinto becomes visible is mainly in small, everyday features of the landscape and the farming calendar rather than in grand institutional ceremony: modest roadside images and small shrines maintained by local families or neighborhoods, and agricultural rites timed to the planting and harvest cycle and performed by ordinary rural households rather than by shrine priests acting in an official capacity. These practices are typically directed at spirits associated with a particular place, a crossroads, a rice field, a well, or a household, rather than at the more widely recognized deities enshrined in major Shinto shrines, and they are maintained through repeated local custom rather than through any centralized religious authority that could issue rulings on correct practice. Folk Shinto's practices vary considerably from one region and even one village to the next, since there is no governing body standardizing them, which scholars treat as a natural consequence of a tradition transmitted almost entirely through family and community habit. This local, undocumented character makes Folk Shinto harder to describe with the precision available for Japan's organized Sect Shinto movements, but it is also, by most accounts, the oldest and most continuously practiced layer of Japanese religious life.
