A Vow Built to Outlast Its Keeper

The Four Bodhisattva Vows, in their most common East Asian formulation, commit the speaker to save innumerable sentient beings, to end inexhaustible defilements, to master boundless dharma gates, and to attain the unsurpassed Buddha way, and each clause is deliberately paired with a quantity described as limitless. Zen commentators have long treated this as the vow's central puzzle rather than an oversight: if beings, defilements and teachings are genuinely without limit, the vow as literally stated can never be completed, and the practice is not to finish it but to keep taking it up again. This distinguishes the bodhisattva vow sharply from vows of limited scope, such as a monastic precept observed for a fixed period, and ties it instead to the Mahayana ideal of the bodhisattva who postpones final liberation, or continually returns to it, for the sake of others.

The vows developed within Mahayana monastic and lay liturgy across medieval China, Korea and Japan, drawing on earlier bodhisattva vow literature but taking their compact four-line form in later liturgical compilation rather than in an early canonical source with a single identifiable origin. Some Mahayana commentators have also linked the vow's four clauses to the four noble truths of earlier Buddhist teaching, reading suffering, its cause, its cessation and the path as an implicit structure beneath the vow's language of beings, defilements, teachings and the Buddha way, though this correspondence is an interpretive reading rather than an explicit feature of the text itself.
