Frederick William Franz, born in Covington, Kentucky in 1893, served as Vice President of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania from 1945 onward, a position from which he became the organization's chief theological voice through the 1960s and into the 1970s. His decades in that role gave him a central hand in shaping the doctrine Jehovah's Witnesses taught during a period of significant growth for the movement.
Franz became President of the Society in 1977, succeeding Nathan Knorr, and remained in that office until his death in 1992. His path to the presidency ran through more than three decades of theological work under the Vice Presidency rather than a sudden rise, giving him a command of the organization's teaching that few other leaders of the period could match by the time he reached its top position.
His tenure placed him in a line of leaders each associated with a specific chronological expectation the Society taught and then had to explain when it did not arrive as expected, following Charles Taze Russell's association with 1914 and Joseph Franklin Rutherford's with 1925. Franz's own turn in that pattern would come from his own theological work rather than from his predecessors' claims, a continuity of leadership and doctrine that ran unbroken from Russell's founding generation through to Franz's own decades at the top of the organization.
