The Shipibo-Conibo way of life has always run along the Ucayali River, but a growing share of the roughly 11,000 to 25,000 people counted in current estimates now lives in Pucallpa, the regional city that has become the practical center of gravity for families seeking schooling and healthcare their riverine communities cannot provide. That movement changes what the tradition looks like in practice without ending it: kene design, ayahuasca based healing and the wider cosmology travel with families into an urban setting rather than staying fixed to a village, carried by practitioners who work across both worlds.
The religion itself has been syncretic for centuries rather than newly so. Franciscan missionaries reached the Ucayali in the late seventeenth century, and Catholic Christianity has sat alongside animist and shamanic practice ever since, in the ordinary way this atlas records for most Indigenous traditions still practiced today: not as a replacement but as an addition, so that a Shipibo-Conibo person's religious life is rarely a choice between the two.
What is comparatively new is the scale of external pressure on the river communities that anchor the tradition. Oil exploration, logging, drug trafficking routes and general environmental degradation along the Ucayali now threaten the same land base that ayahuasca healing, kene production and the wider cosmology have always depended on, pressure distinct from the slower, centuries long process of religious blending and one that bears directly on whether the traditional practice can continue to be transmitted from the river rather than only remembered from the city.
