Radha as the Perfection of Devotion, Not a Consort

Gaudiya Vaishnavism holds that Radha, Krishna's beloved among the cowherd women of Vrindavana, is not merely a consort standing beside him but the very embodiment of devotion, prema, in its highest and most complete form, so that her love for Krishna becomes the pattern against which every devotee measures the quality of their own. Krishna: The Beautiful Legend of God presents her love as unmixed with any wish for personal gain, status or even liberation itself, a devotion sought purely for its own sake rather than for any reward it might secure, which is precisely what the tradition holds makes it the highest religious condition attainable. Hare Krishna Transformed records that the aim of advanced Gaudiya practice is accordingly not to be worshipped alongside Radha or to receive devotion oneself but to share, however imperfectly, in her particular mood toward Krishna, a spiritual aspiration the tradition calls madhurya bhava, the sweet mood of a beloved toward the one she loves without reservation. This reading treats Radha's story less as a romance to be admired from outside than as a spiritual model to be entered into, the emotional intensity of her longing for Krishna held up as the emotional register devotion itself is meant to reach.
