Ger and Its Elder Futhark Cognate, Jera

Ger is the twelfth of the twenty four Futhorc runes carried from the Elder Futhark, its name and reading a direct continuation of Jera, whose own name likewise means year or harvest, the underlying agricultural concept, the year understood specifically through its harvest rather than as an abstract span of time, surviving intact across both traditions even as the Old English stanza built on it develops an explicitly Christian framing the pre-Christian continental tradition would not have carried.

R. I. Page's account notes that Jera's letterform in the Elder Futhark, and the corresponding shape Ger carries into the futhorc, is among the more debated in runic scholarship, variously read as depicting two linked arcs suggesting the cyclical turning of the seasons, though as with Is's icicle reading such pictorial interpretations remain suggestive rather than settled. Ger's sound value in the futhorc is given as j or y depending on phonetic context, one of a small number of runes in the row whose value shifts with its surrounding sounds rather than remaining fixed, a genuine complexity in the futhorc's use as a practical writing system that the row's divinatory and commemorative uses did not need to resolve.
