A Widow Runs a Trading House and Writes the Earliest Known Memoir by a Jewish Woman

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Gluckel of Hameln took over the family trading business after the death of her first husband, a documented assumption of business leadership distinct from a widow who withdrew from commercial life once her husband had died. She continued running it through a second marriage, a documented continuity of her own control distinct from a business that passed out of her hands once she remarried.

Around 1690 she began writing a Yiddish memoir addressed to her fourteen children, a documented act of family authorship distinct from a text composed for publication or for a patron outside her own household. The memoir mixes practical business record, family history, moral instruction and vivid accounts of Jewish communal life in Hamburg, Hameln and Metz across the second half of the seventeenth century, a documented range of content distinct from a narrow ledger or a purely devotional text.

That a woman who ran an international trading business through two marriages also produced, in the years around 1690, what stands today as the earliest known extensive autobiography written by a Jewish woman, marks Gluckel of Hameln's memoir as a documented case where a life spent managing accounts and a life spent recording it in her own words turned out to be the same life.
