A Sign with a Contested Reputation

The goat has the most disputed reputation of the twelve. A modern popular belief in parts of China holds that people born in a goat year, and particularly women, will have unhappy lives, and birth rates have dipped in goat years as a result. Folklorists and historians have pointed out that this belief is not old: it appears to have spread widely only in the twentieth century, and its usual justification, a supposed saying that only one in ten goat-year people finds happiness, has been traced to late and unreliable sources. Chinese state media have themselves published debunkings of it. The example is instructive: the twelve-animal cycle is a living popular tradition, and beliefs attached to it can be invented, spread and become socially consequential within living memory, which is a good reason to date such beliefs rather than to present the whole system as uniformly ancient.

Demographic study of the modern goat-year birth dip treats it as a useful case study precisely because it is recent and well documented enough to trace: researchers have identified specific decades in the twentieth century when the belief measurably strengthened in mainland Chinese, Hong Kong and Taiwanese data, allowing the spread of a folk superstition to be dated with a precision rarely possible for older beliefs attached to the zodiac, in contrast to genuinely ancient attributions such as the dragon's imperial status or the ox's agricultural role, whose origins recede into the Han dynasty and earlier with no comparable paper trail.
