A Presence Within, Not a Ruler Apart

New Thought bodies describe God not as a distant ruler standing apart from the world and acting on it occasionally from outside, but as a presence or governing principle already indwelling every single person and every created thing without exception. On this understanding prayer is not petition addressed upward to a being who might or might not choose to grant it in a given case, but a recognition, arrived at through disciplined thought, of a divine condition already fully present and available to be realized rather than obtained from elsewhere. The claim functions as standard shared teaching across the movement's various denominations rather than as a formally defined dogma unique to any single one of them in particular, and it supplies the theological ground underneath the companion teaching that rightly directed thought can shape health and circumstance, since if the divine principle is already dwelling within the very person doing the thinking, disciplined thought is not appealing outward to some separate power but simply activating one already fully present within. Because the principle is held to indwell every person equally regardless of religious affiliation, ordinary sickness and misfortune are treated within this teaching as arising from a failure to recognize a presence that was never actually absent, rather than as punishment imposed by a being standing in judgment from somewhere outside the world entirely.
