The physical Govardhan hill near Mathura that the festival venerates is a modest sandstone outcrop rather than a true mountain, and decades of stone quarrying in the surrounding area, along with heavy pilgrim foot traffic around its base during the popular circumambulation, parikrama, that devotees perform, have drawn sustained concern from local conservationists and religious authorities about physical erosion and degradation of the hill itself, concerns serious enough that Indian courts have at various points restricted quarrying activity in the vicinity specifically to protect the site.

The situation creates an unusual and pointed irony given the festival's own central story, in which Krishna lifts the entire hill to protect the community from Indra's storm: worshippers who circle the physical hill each Govardhan Puja to honour the deity's act of protecting the land are, in the view of environmental campaigners, now themselves part of a pattern of physical pressure that the hill needs protecting from, a tension between devotional practice and site conservation that pilgrimage authorities and religious trusts in the area have had to address directly through pathway management and quarrying restrictions.
