A Different Phase of the Same Ministry

Guru Nanak spent his final years not travelling or preaching in public but farming a field, treating the ordinary work itself as the teaching.

A different phase of the same ministry

After decades of extensive travel spreading his teachings, Guru Nanak settled at Kartarpur and spent roughly the last eighteen years of his life there farming the land alongside his followers, modelling the principle of Kirat Karo, earning an honest living through one's own labour, as a lived example rather than only as abstract instruction.

Community built around a shared table

Kartarpur is understood as a formative site for the practice of langar, communal eating without regard to caste or social status, with Guru Nanak's household reportedly cooking and eating alongside farmers and visitors of all backgrounds, establishing a practice that later became one of Sikhism's most consistently observed institutions across every major gurdwara covered in this atlas.

The modern Kartarpur Corridor, a visa-free border crossing opened in 2019 allowing Indian pilgrims direct access to the site, and its history of opening and closing amid broader India-Pakistan tensions, are addressed in this entry's companion article rather than repeated here.
