A Budget That Nearly Balances Itself

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Habitat for Humanity International's most recent audited accounts, for the fiscal year ended 30 June 2025, report total revenue of 370,010,910 US dollars against total expenses of 370,740,903 US dollars, a gap of under a million dollars either way on a budget of roughly 370 million. For an organization of that size, revenue and expenses landing within a fraction of one percent of each other is a sign of a mature, steady-state operation rather than either rapid growth or retrenchment, a budget built to spend close to what it takes in rather than to accumulate reserves or draw them down.

That steadiness sits on top of the "partnership housing" principle the organization was founded on: homes built alongside the families who will live in them, financed through affordable mortgages rather than given outright, so that a family's own labor and repayment become part of how the program sustains itself rather than relying solely on continuous new donations. A budget that nearly balances is consistent with a model designed from the start to be more self-sustaining than a pure grant-and-give charity, even though Habitat for Humanity International still depends on donated funds and volunteer labor for the overwhelming majority of what it builds each year.
