This haftarah opens with a command to Zion to arise and shine, since her light has come and God's glory has risen over her, even while darkness covers the rest of the earth, and nations and kings are drawn toward that same brightness, coming from a distance to walk in her light.
Isaiah describes a great gathering of wealth flowing toward Zion, camels bringing gold and frankincense, foreign flocks offered as acceptable sacrifices, and ships bringing silver and gold in tribute, all framed as honor finally paid to a city that had once been forsaken and hated. Foreigners themselves will help rebuild her walls, and her gates will stand open continually, admitting the wealth of nations day and night without need for defense.
The haftarah closes describing a transformed future in which violence will no longer be heard within her borders, and God's own presence will replace the sun and moon as her everlasting light, closing with the promise that the smallest among her people will become a great nation, and God will hasten this transformation in its appointed time.
The image of gates standing open continually, admitting wealth day and night without need for defense, is a striking reversal of the ordinary logic of a fortified city, security here coming not from closed walls but from a peace so complete that walls no longer need to serve their usual defensive purpose at all.
