This haftarah opens with Amos cataloguing Israel's social sins in the same rhythmic pattern he has just used against Israel's neighboring nations, condemning a people who sell the righteous for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, who trample the poor into the dust and deny justice to the afflicted, framing exploitation of the vulnerable as the specific transgression that will bring judgment.
The prophet then recalls how God brought this people out of Egypt and led them through the wilderness for forty years, raised up prophets and Nazirites from among their own sons, only to have the people corrupt the Nazirites with wine and silence the prophets, a history of favor met with active resistance rather than gratitude.
The haftarah closes with a series of rhetorical questions built on cause and effect, can two walk together unless they have agreed to meet, does a lion roar in the forest when it has no prey, arguing that just as each of these natural effects has a necessary cause, so the prophet's own warning has a necessary cause: God has spoken, and the prophet cannot help but declare it.
The prophet's closing insistence that he cannot help but speak once God has spoken mirrors, in its own way, Joseph's own position throughout this parashah, a man repeatedly compelled to act on what he knows to be true, interpreting dreams and eventually revealing his identity, regardless of the risk that honesty carries for him personally.
