The Hail Mary reaches most Catholics chiefly through the rosary, where it is repeated ten times in a row, a unit called a decade, between an Our Father and a closing Glory Be, while the person praying meditates on one of a set of scenes from the lives of Jesus and Mary known as the mysteries. Its sheer repetition, a standard five-decade rosary involves fifty recitations, is deliberate: the prayer's simple, memorized wording is meant to occupy the tongue while the mind is freed to dwell on the mystery being contemplated, a technique closer in function to the repeated invocations of other contemplative traditions than to a prayer meant to be attended to word by word.
Beyond the rosary, it is used in the Angelus, in litanies, and as a simple, quickly said prayer of personal devotion outside any larger structure. Its Latin text, Ave Maria, has also been set to music by a very large number of composers across centuries, from Gregorian chant through Renaissance polyphony to well-known nineteenth-century concert settings, giving it a presence in Western musical culture considerably wider than its specifically devotional use within Catholic and Orthodox practice. Some contemporary Catholic educators encourage counting the repetitions on ordinary fingers or any available beads when a formal rosary is unavailable, treating the physical counting motion itself, rather than any particular material object, as the practice's essential support.
