A Bestseller Reads the Headlines as Prophecy

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Hal Lindsey's 1970 book The Late Great Planet Earth, written with Carole C. Carlson, applied dispensational premillennial theology to contemporary geopolitics, reading current events of the day as fulfillment of biblical end times prophecy for a general readership rather than a specialist theological one. The book's approach, treating the news itself as a text to be read alongside scripture, gave prophecy writing a topical urgency distinct from more purely doctrinal treatments of the same material.

The New York Times called it the best selling nonfiction book of the decade, a commercial reach for a work of dispensational prophecy that carried Lindsey's reading of current events to an audience far beyond evangelical Christianity's existing readership. That scale of sales made The Late Great Planet Earth the best known popular voice for reading geopolitics as biblical fulfillment in late twentieth century American evangelicalism, a position no comparable prophecy book of the period matched.

Lindsey's own background, a former tugboat captain turned Dallas Theological Seminary graduate rather than a career pulpit minister, gave the book's popular voice a biography behind it that differed from the more conventional clergy authorship readers might otherwise have expected from a work applying prophecy to the day's headlines, a combination of secular working life and formal seminary training that the book's reception never separated from its content.
