Kufa, Fewer Transmitters and a School Built to Compensate

The stricter Hanafi test for solitary reports traces to circumstances of the school's own early formation in Kufa, a city considerably further from Medina, where the bulk of hadith transmission through the Prophet's closest companions had concentrated, than the cities where the other early schools took shape. Was the Gate of Ijtihad Closed? situates the Hanafi emphasis on reasoning within this transmission geography, arguing that a school working with a comparatively thinner local supply of well attested hadith had practical reason to develop more rigorous secondary tests for the reports that did reach it, rather than accepting solitary transmission at face value the way schools closer to Medina's dense oral record more readily could. The Encyclopaedia of Islam, 2nd edition records that this history left a lasting methodological signature on Hanafi jurisprudence, a school more willing than most to reason from general principles and analogy and correspondingly more cautious about reports resting on a single line of transmission, a signature that persisted long after the geographic conditions that originally produced it had ceased to matter in the same way, since Hanafi legal method was by then transmitted as a coherent system in its own right rather than as an improvised response to local circumstance.
