A Sephirotic Archangel

In this collection Haniel appears as the archangel assigned to Netzach, one of the ten sephiroth (emanations) of the Tree of Life in Kabbalah. The practice of assigning an archangel to each sephirah, together with a divine name and an angelic choir, was developed in Jewish Kabbalah and was taken up and systematised by Christian Kabbalists and, in its now-standard English form, by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Haniel governs Netzach in that scheme. Several of the names recur elsewhere in this collection under the planetary and elemental systems, a sign of the three overlapping traditions that Western esotericism inherited and never fully harmonised. The scheme is presented as a documented esoteric tradition rather than as religious doctrine or as a claim about angelic beings.

Haniel, "grace" or "glory of God," suits Netzach's association with Venus and with love and beauty, but like Khamael he has no place in 1 Enoch's rosters or in the Eastern Christian traditions' own sevens, and his standard modern form owes far more to later Kabbalistic and Golden Dawn compilation than to any older textual layer. Where Gabriel's standing rests on repeated, independent attestation across Jewish, Christian and Islamic canonical texts, Haniel's rests on a single relatively late esoteric lineage, and the two should not be read as figures of comparable documentary weight despite sharing the same table here.
