Libra 10: The Garden of Flowers

Charubel's image for this degree is disarmingly simple: a lovely garden of flowers. After the knives, bogs and precipices of Libra's first ten degrees the catalogue closes the decan with achieved beauty, and the interpretation should resist rushing past the loveliness to find a catch. A flower garden is nature curated, wildness neither suppressed nor abandoned but composed, colour arranged by a mind that consulted the plants' own habits; it is the visible result of invisible labour, weeding, staking and watering all absent from the picture because they have succeeded.

Read against the tenth degree of Libra the garden is the sign's promise kept, harmony not as an abstraction on a scale-beam but as a place a person can stand in, relationships tended until they bloom together, difference orchestrated into fragrance rather than argued into uniformity. Every flower in a good bed is unlike its neighbours and the bed is the better for it, which is Libra's whole social theory stated in horticulture. The garden also asks to be entered rather than owned; loveliness of this kind exists in the visiting. The shadow is the gardener's melancholy, beauty's dependence on maintenance, the bed one neglected season away from weeds, and the subtler risk of arranging lives as if people were plantings. On a natal Venus, Moon or Ascendant this degree tends to mark makers of pleasant worlds, homes, teams and rooms that flower, and its counsel is the gardener's calendar: enjoy the bloom fully, and keep the quiet work going that made it.
