A Movement That Has Had to Confront Its Own Fringe

Heathenry has faced particular, well documented internal tension over its association in some circles with racist or ethnically exclusive ideology, sometimes termed folkish Heathenry by scholars and practitioners distinguishing it from universalist Heathen organizations that explicitly reject any ethnic or racial restriction on participation, a division significant enough that major Heathen organizations have taken public positions on the question and some have organized specifically in opposition to racist appropriation of Heathen symbols and practice. This internal contestation, actively discussed within Heathen communities themselves rather than only observed by outside scholars, means that any general reference source describing Heathenry has a particular responsibility not to flatten this real and consequential diversity of belief and organizational position into a single undifferentiated account.

Given both this internal diversity and the same underlying reconstruction limitations affecting Norse pagan revival more broadly, this entry limits itself to recording Heathenry's general character as a revival movement and the significant internal debate over inclusion and ideology that shapes its contemporary landscape, without describing or endorsing the specific prayer or ritual practice of any particular Heathen organization.
