Heraclitus's teaching survives only in fragments, a documented state of transmission distinct from a philosopher whose work reaches later readers as a complete and continuous text. His life is dated only to a floruit of about 500 BCE, reckoned by ancient chronographers to the sixty ninth Olympiad, a documented approximate dating distinct from an exact birth and death year fixed by independent record. Neither the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy nor Wikipedia records an independently confirmed birth or death year for him, a documented absence distinct from a life whose endpoints are settled even where its content is not.
