Henry Corbin Proposes a Chair and Esotericism Gets Its First Academic Address

The history of Western esotericism studies Hermeticism, Christian Kabbalah, alchemy, Rosicrucianism, Freemasonry and theosophy as documented historical currents with named authors, dated texts and traceable influence, rather than as branches of one timeless perennial wisdom. The discipline received its first institutional home in 1965, when a chair titled History of Christian Esotericism was created at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris at the suggestion of the Islamicist Henry Corbin, and filled by the Christian Kabbalah specialist Francois Secret. The chair gave scholars studying Renaissance magic and post Reformation mysticism a recognized university address for the first time, distinct from both church history and the history of philosophy.

For a religion atlas the discipline matters because esoteric movements routinely present themselves as continuous with ancient wisdom, Egyptian, Hermetic or otherwise, when the documented record shows something narrower and later.
