Contemplation as the Engine of Feeling

Hitbonenut, contemplation, names sustained, structured meditative reflection on a specific concept, most often an idea about God's nature, presence or relationship to creation, held in the mind deliberately and at length until the intellectual understanding it produces moves the heart into genuine corresponding feeling, a movement from head to heart the practice treats as its whole purpose rather than as an incidental side effect of study. Chabad Hasidism, the branch of Hasidic Judaism founded by Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liady, gives hitbonenut a uniquely central and systematised place within its spiritual method, distinguishing itself from several other Hasidic schools precisely through its strong emphasis on structured intellectual contemplation as the primary engine of religious feeling, summarised in the school's own name, Chabad, an acronym of chochmah, binah and da'at, wisdom, understanding and knowledge, the three intellectual faculties the movement holds must be engaged and cultivated before authentic emotional devotion can properly follow, rather than emotional fervour being pursued directly or independently of sustained intellectual work.
