A Duty Interrupted, Not a Custom Explained

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Wole Soyinka's Death and the King's Horseman begins from an actual event of the British colonial period in Nigeria: a Yoruba king's horseman, whose religious duty on the king's death was to take his own life so his spirit could accompany the king's into the ancestral world, was stopped from doing so by a district officer who treated the act as a crime to be prevented rather than a rite to be respected.

Soyinka builds his 1975 play around that same collision, but he has resisted readings of it as a simple contest between an African tradition and a colonial ban. In the play, Elesin Oba is the king's horseman, and his expected death is not despair or fatalism but an office he holds, the last act of a life spent serving the king in this world and preparing to serve him in the next. Yoruba cosmology, as the play presents it, treats the living, the dead and the unborn as three connected realms rather than separate ones, and the horseman's death is the hinge that keeps the connection intact when a king dies. When the district officer Simon Pilkings intervenes and stops Elesin, the play's catastrophe follows not from the ritual itself but from its interruption: the disrupted order falls instead on Elesin's own son, Olunde, recently returned from medical study in England, who completes the ritual suicide his father could not, restoring the family's honor at a cost the play does not soften.
