Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.By Soyinka's own account, Death and the King's Horseman has been read and taught far more often than it has been staged, a gap unusual for a play regularly named among the major achievements of African theatre. Its most significant productions include Soyinka's own 1979 staging in Chicago, a 1987 run at Lincoln Center in New York, and a 2009 production at London's Royal National Theatre directed by Rufus Norris. A Netflix film adaptation premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022, bringing the play to a far larger audience than any stage run had reached. Scholarship on the play has increasingly focused on how its ritual suicides should be read rather than simply cataloguing its colonial critique. A 2017 study by Tertsea Ikyoive and Ayub Sheik in the South African Theatre Journal argues that Elesin's and Olunde's deaths are best understood inside Yoruba belief as a necessary and pragmatic response to a ritual obligation that has been disrupted, not primarily as an escape from personal shame, a reading that treats the play's cosmology as a working belief system rather than as backdrop for a political argument. That shift in how critics read the play, from colonial allegory toward the internal logic of the ritual itself, is a large part of why it remains a standard text in African drama study today.Cross-Tradition ConnectionsArticle OnDeath and the King's Horseman, Literary Works Well-attested Source Divinity Atlas Original Articles, Second Editiontier 1SourcesDartmouth College, Rauner Library: Goodman Theatre Death and the King's Horseman Study Guide (1979)tier 1Dartmouth College, Rauner Special Collections Library, Archives and ManuscriptsStudy guide and press materials record confirming the Goodman Theatre, Chicago production ran October 5 to November 11, 1979, written and directed by Soyinka himselfthe holders' own accountView the SourceComments (0)No comments yet.
