The atlas records Horus's veneration status as historically attested with no continuous cult, and the concrete historic center that standing rests on is Edfu, in Upper Egypt, home to the Temple of Horus, one of the best preserved temple complexes to survive from ancient Egypt at all, its walls and roof still largely intact because later structures were built directly over and around it, sealing it from much of the weathering and looting that stripped other sites bare. The temple's own inscriptions record the Feast of the Beautiful Meeting, an annual festival in which the cult statue of Hathor traveled by river from her own temple at Dendera to Edfu to join Horus, an event the surviving temple reliefs describe and depict in detail rather than leave to later report, real evidence of an actual, dated, repeated ritual calendar rather than myth alone. That evidence is exactly what makes the silence since worth stating plainly. Egyptian temple religion as a functioning system ended with the empire wide closure of pagan sanctuaries under Christian rule in the late fourth century CE, and Edfu's own priesthood, festival calendar and daily rites ended with it. The temple survives today as an excavated and extensively restored archaeological site, one of Egypt's most visited ancient monuments, its inscriptions read by tourists and scholars rather than recited by a priesthood, the honest gap between a real historic cult and no living continuation of it.
