How Tenrikyo's First Church Opened in Honolulu

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Tenrikyo reached Hawaii through the same Japanese immigrant communities that organized contract labor emigration had been carrying to the islands' sugar plantations since 1885. Decades of that migration passed before the movement's presence in Hawaii took a settled institutional form of its own.

The Tenrikyo Hawaii Mission opened its first church in Honolulu in 1929, a founding later documented in the Mission's own 1957 history, Tenrikyo Hawai Dendo Shi, the record this article draws its date from. Even after that first church opened, formal organization lagged behind practice on the ground: the Mission Headquarters of Hawaii was not itself established until 1954, twenty five years after the Honolulu church it would eventually govern had already opened its doors to worshippers.

What the Honolulu church changed for Tenrikyo's spread was reach beyond Japan itself, carried not by missionaries sent out from the movement's own headquarters but by the ordinary migration of Japanese contract laborers and their descendants, a path that took over four decades from the first plantation arrivals in 1885 to a dedicated church home in 1929, and a further quarter century before that presence gained a formal headquarters of its own in the islands.
