The Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus formally organized on 21 January 1959 in Addis Ababa, taking its name, meaning Place of Jesus, from its first congregation. What began as a single named body grew explosively across the decades that followed: membership reached 5,279,822 in 2009 and climbed to roughly 12,000,000 by 2023, an increase of about 127 percent that far outpaced Ethiopia's own population growth over the same years.
That growth carried the church past every older Lutheran body established under German, Scandinavian and North American missionary effort. Mekane Yesus is now the largest member church of the Lutheran World Federation worldwide and the largest Lutheran body found anywhere on the African continent, a position that put the movement's center of gravity somewhere its nineteenth and early twentieth century founders had not anticipated.
What the 1959 organization in Addis Ababa changed for Lutheranism's spread was direction as much as size. A church founded from a single Addis Ababa congregation, and named for it, became within little more than sixty years the tradition's largest living expression anywhere in the world, evidence that Lutheranism's twenty first century weight sits in Africa rather than in the regions where the Reformation itself began.
