How the Russian Orthodox Mission Reached Alaska

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Ten monks from the Valaam Monastery and nearby Russian monasteries, sent at the request of Metropolitan Gabriel of Saint Petersburg, left Saint Petersburg in December 1793 and made the long journey across Siberia and the North Pacific to reach Kodiak Island in September 1794, founding the first organised Russian Orthodox mission anywhere in North America. Alaska at the time was Russian territory, governed as part of the Russian Empire's Pacific holdings, not yet part of the United States, which purchased it only in 1867, well after this mission had already taken root among the local population.

One of the ten, Herman, remained on Kodiak for the rest of his life, teaching, nursing the sick and raising orphans among the Alutiiq and, later, the Tlingit, long after most of the original party had returned home or moved on; he was canonised centuries afterward as the first Orthodox saint recognised in North America.

What this changed for Christianity's spread was the planting of Orthodox Christianity in North America decades before the continent's Pacific coast came under United States control at all. Herman's decision to stay and serve rather than return home gave the Alaskan mission a continuity across generations that outlasted the change of flags over the territory itself, carrying Orthodoxy into Alaska's religious life down to the present day.
