The Seed of the Great Goddess

Hrim is one of the principal seed syllables (bija mantras) of the goddess in Shakta practice, the worship of the divine feminine, where it is especially attached to Bhuvaneshvari, the goddess as mistress of the cosmos, and used widely across goddess mantras. Known in the tradition as the maya bija, the seed of the creative power that both veils and manifests the world, it is treated as a concentrated sound-form of the goddess's energy rather than as a word with a translatable meaning. Such seed syllables stand at the core of tantric mantra practice, where a deity is held to be present in and invoked through their sound, and Hrim appears both on its own in meditation and japa and as a component of longer goddess mantras. Its use belongs to the Shakta and tantric traditions that developed an elaborate science of sacred sound, in which the goddess is approached through the vibratory seeds regarded as her very substance.
