Meditation and Inner Peace: An Office from the Modern Side

The sixty-second is assigned meditation and inner peace in current lists. The phrase is worth examining, because the concept it names has itself been substantially reshaped in the same period that produced the attribution.

Meditation in the sources this system comes from means something fairly specific: discursive religious contemplation, the sustained turning over of a scriptural text or a divine attribute, in the Christian devotional tradition and in its Kabbalistic parallels. It is verbal, directed and doctrinally furnished.

Meditation in the register the modern attribute lists are written in means something else, a practice of attention, often non-verbal, often framed as secular, and shaped by the twentieth-century transmission of Buddhist and Hindu techniques into Europe and North America. That transmission is well studied and its history is not long.

An attribute list that assigns an angel to meditation and inner peace is therefore not translating a term; it is using a modern word that its earlier layers did not have in this sense.

The observation generalises across the whole attribute column. Terms such as manifestation, self-improvement, transformation, energy, breakthrough and connection carry meanings shaped by the last century of popular spiritual writing, and reading them back into a seventeenth-century angelology produces a systematic anachronism, one that is invisible precisely because the words are ordinary English.

This is the subtlest of the dating problems in the material, and the hardest to correct for. Provenance can be established for a name, a verse or a tarot card. A drift in the meaning of a common word leaves no citation trail at all.
