Learning and Transmitting Icaros

Within vegetalista tradition, icaros are understood to be received rather than simply composed: a healer typically reports learning a given icaro directly from the spirit of a specific plant, most often encountered during an extended isolated dieta, a period of dietary restriction and often solitary plant use undertaken specifically to deepen a practitioner's relationship with that plant's spirit and receive its associated song. This model of transmission places the practice outside a conventional teacher-to-student musical apprenticeship in the way Western musical training is usually understood, even though extensive learning from an established healer, through years of direct guidance, dietary discipline and participation in ceremony, remains essential to how a new practitioner actually develops a working repertoire and the skill to use it effectively.

As ayahuasca ceremonies have spread internationally beyond their traditional Amazonian mestizo and indigenous contexts, icaros have correspondingly reached far wider audiences, including through some ceremonies led by practitioners without full traditional training, a development that has drawn serious concern from Amazonian healers and researchers about the dilution or misapplication of a practice whose songs were understood within their originating tradition to carry real spiritual and medical function rather than serving as atmospheric music alone.
