Virgo 1: The Emphasized Portrait

Virgo opens with Mercury's own mutable earth taking over from Leo's fixed fire, and though Mercury rules the sign entire, this first decan in the Chaldean face order goes instead to the Sun, while the Egyptian term for the first seven degrees stays with Mercury itself, so the sign's own ruler and its solar neighbor share this opening stretch between them. A portrait is painted, or perhaps simply seen, with its subject's most telling features deliberately emphasized rather than rendered with even, documentary accuracy, artistry used specifically to clarify meaning rather than to flatter or merely record.

Wheeler produced this image in the 1925 Balboa Park session; the reading attached here is Rudhyar's 1973 language, and it treats portraiture as a model for judgment generally, selecting what matters and letting the rest recede. The shadow is emphasis mistaken for the whole truth, a portrait so committed to its chosen features that everything else about the sitter goes missing from the record.
