Secrecy and Succession

This lineage-based, degree-structured model, inherited from Gerald Gardner's founding of modern Wicca and continued in the Alexandrian tradition, gives these forms of the craft their character as initiatory mystery traditions with oath-bound teaching. It stands in sharp contrast to Seax-Wica and eclectic solitary practice, which permit self-initiation and open access. The affirmation makes valid membership a matter of transmitted initiation rather than personal choice, and it preserves the traditions' teachings and authority through a controlled succession.

Scholars who have examined the movement's foundational text, the Book of Shadows Gardner circulated among initiates, including Aidan Kelly and Philip Heselton, have traced substantial portions of its ritual material to earlier published sources, ceremonial magic drawn from the Golden Dawn tradition and from Aleister Crowley, with whom Gardner had contact, alongside folklore and Masonic-style initiatory structure, rather than to any continuously transmitted ancient text; this documented borrowing has not diminished the material's ritual authority within the initiatory lineages that guard it, which treat the Book of Shadows as a living, oath-protected working text rather than a claimed historical relic.
