Reading Ixpiyacoc Beside His Better Documented Kin

Because the Popol Vuh gives Ixpiyacoc almost no independent action apart from Ixmucane, the historical and art historical record for him specifically is thin compared to figures such as Huracan or the Hero Twins, who appear independently in Classic period iconography as well as in the text. Michael Coe and Stephen Houston's survey of Maya civilization notes that paired creator ancestors of this kind are attested more clearly in narrative sources like the Popol Vuh than they are in securely identified monumental art, which makes Ixpiyacoc primarily a textual figure for current scholarship rather than one with an established independent iconographic tradition. This does not mean he was unimportant within Kiche religious thought, only that the surviving evidence for how he may have been depicted or invoked outside the text has not been established with confidence. What the Popol Vuh does make clear is his structural role, as the grandfather at the root of the line that produces the Hero Twins, and as one half of the divinatory pair whose casting of lots repeatedly determines how the story's key moments unfold. This atlas records that structural certainty and the surrounding iconographic uncertainty side by side rather than resolving one into the other.
