Authority Without a Centre

The Sangha has no single head comparable to a pope or a chief rabbi, and this is deliberate rather than an accident of history: authority in Jainism runs through teaching lineages rather than through a central office. An acharya, the senior monastic who heads a particular lineage, exercises authority within that lineage over ordination, discipline and doctrine, but no acharya has ever held authority over Jainism as a whole, and multiple lineages have coexisted since the tradition's early centuries without ever resolving into one governing structure. What holds the fourfold community together instead is a set of mutual dependencies that run in both directions rather than downward from clergy to laity.

Monastics may not handle money, grow or store food, or perform ordinary economic activity, since these fall outside the vows of total non attachment they have taken, so they depend entirely on the laity for daily alms and for the funding and administration of temples. In return the laity depend on the monastics for teaching, for the performance of major rites, and for the living example of the ascetic path that lay Jains are not expected to follow in full but are expected to revere and support. Shravakas and shravikas who fund temple construction, sponsor manuscript copying or organise pilgrimage are understood to be accumulating merit through that support itself, not merely enabling someone else's practice, which is part of why lay patronage has historically been treated as central to Jain religious life rather than peripheral to it.
