The Archangel Who Rewards Labour

Jehudiel is honoured in the Eastern Orthodox Synaxis of the Bodiless Powers as the archangel who rewards the labour of those who serve God and, correspondingly, admonishes those who fail. His name is read as "praise of God." In iconography he holds a golden crown in one hand, the reward of virtuous work, and a whip or scourge of three cords in the other, the correction of the negligent, so that his image displays both mercy and discipline at once. His special patronage falls on those who work and labour, and on rulers and those in authority, whose burdens he is held to lighten and whose just governance he supports.

Like several of the Orthodox seven, he appears in no canonical scripture; his identity is a product of the Eastern tradition's scheme of seven principal archangels, each assigned a ministry drawn from the offices angels perform in scripture. He is the archangel of vocation, the one who watches over the effort a life is spent on.
