A Discovery Presented as Older Than It Is

Puleo and Horowitz's book frames the six solfeggio frequencies as a recovery of an ancient sacred scale, once used in Gregorian chant and later suppressed, that their numerological method had merely rediscovered rather than invented. Musicologists and historians who have examined the claim against the actual medieval solmization tradition, the syllable system Guido of Arezzo devised in the eleventh century, find no evidence these specific modern-standard frequencies correspond to anything in historical chant practice, since Guido's syllables named relative scale degrees rather than fixed pitches at the values Puleo and Horowitz cite; the "ancient" framing appears to be a retrospective narrative built around a modern numerological exercise rather than a genuine historical recovery.

Whatever the method's scholarly standing, its practical effect on contemporary spirituality has been substantial: the frequencies Puleo derived, especially 528 Hz, are now sold on tuning forks, streamed in meditation recordings and marketed across sound healing and New Age wellness practice worldwide as scientifically validated tools for physical and spiritual restoration, a claim with no support in peer-reviewed biology or musicology. Puleo himself remained a private figure relative to his more publicly visible co-author, working as a herbalist and healer in Idaho until his death in 2008, by most available accounts still identified chiefly as the discoverer of the numerical pattern rather than as the architect of the wider claims later built upon it.
