A Dance That Lured a Goddess Out of a Cave

Kagura's own mythic origin is told directly in Shinto's foundational chronicles, the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki: when the sun goddess Amaterasu withdrew into a cave in anger or distress and plunged the world into darkness, the other deities gathered outside, and the goddess Ame no Uzume performed a wild, comic dance on an overturned tub that made the assembled gods laugh so loudly that Amaterasu, curious what could amuse them in her absence, opened the cave enough to look out and was drawn back into the world, restoring light; this dance is cited within the tradition itself as kagura's founding act, entertainment offered to the kami that succeeds precisely by drawing them toward the living rather than by solemn petition alone.

From that shared mythic root, kagura split historically into markedly different institutional forms: mikagura, the court kagura performed within the imperial palace by a small number of trained performers according to a fixed, ancient repertoire, and the far more numerous and varied satokagura, folk kagura traditions maintained at shrines and by local performing troupes across Japan's regions, some preserving distinct masked dance dramas, musical styles, and stories found nowhere else, several of which have been separately recognized for the depth of local tradition they preserve. A visitor watching kagura today may be seeing either an ancient, unchanging court repertoire or a distinct regional tradition with centuries of its own local development, and the two are related but not interchangeable.
