Dialogue Under Suspicion

KAICIID's opening ceremony in Vienna in November 2012 was picketed before it began. Austria's Green Party and a coalition of human rights groups gathered outside to object to a Saudi-funded dialogue centre opening in their capital while Saudi Arabia itself restricted religious freedom and carried out judicial executions its critics considered a matter the Centre's own mission ought to address rather than host around. The tension did not fade with time. In 2014 KAICIID's deputy director, Claudia Bandion-Ortner, gave an interview to the Austrian magazine Profil in which she dismissed criticism of Saudi executions as nonsense, a remark that drew calls from the Greens for a parliamentary inquiry and was condemned by Vienna's LGBT advocacy groups. Austria's chancellor at the time, Werner Faymann, publicly questioned whether the Centre was actually meeting its stated goals of promoting human rights, justice and peace, and critics went further, arguing the Centre risked serving as cover for the spread of Saudi-aligned religious influence abroad while diverting attention from the kingdom's own record at home.

The suspicion never fully lifted. KAICIID left Vienna for Lisbon in 2021 and 2022 still carrying what reporting at the time called a negative Saudi image it had been unable to shake in nearly a decade as an Austrian host. Whatever dialogue the Centre has facilitated abroad, at home in Vienna it never stopped being read, by a significant part of its host public, as an argument about Saudi Arabia rather than about interfaith understanding.
