Which Layer Kali Mudra Belongs To

The word mudra covers three bodies of material that get printed together and are neither the same age nor the same kind of thing. The iconographic layer is a hand position that identifies a figure in sculpture and painting, readable from the early centuries CE onward. The textual layer is the mudras named in the hatha and tantric corpus, where a mudra is a whole bodily technique rather than a hand shape. The third is a twentieth century therapeutic literature of finger positions matched to elements and ailments, which borrows the vocabulary of the other two and is continuous with neither.

Kali Mudra sits awkwardly across the layers, and saying so is more honest than placing it. The interlaced-hands gesture is taught widely in contemporary yoga under this name and is presented there as invoking the fierce goddess. What it does not have is a clear line back to a named classical source under that name: the goddess is ancient and abundantly attested, and the gesture as taught is not demonstrably the same age as she is.

A gesture can be genuine practice without being old, and this is a case where the atlas can say which it is. Modern devotional and yogic practice is a living thing that continues to generate forms, and there is nothing deficient about a twentieth or twenty first century gesture used sincerely. What would be wrong is to let the age of the goddess transfer silently to the age of the seal. Where a specific text or lineage attesting the gesture under this name is identified, it belongs in the record; until then, the honest statement is that the practice is current and the provenance is not established.
