Paryushana and the Living Tradition

The Kalpa Sutra occupies a central place not merely as a text to be studied but as a liturgical work at the heart of Svetambara devotional life. It is publicly recited over the course of the annual festival of Paryushana, the most important observance of the Jain year, an eight-day period of fasting, confession, reconciliation and intensified religious discipline. During this festival the recitation of the Kalpa Sutra, and especially of the life of Mahavira, is a communal event of great solemnity and joy, and richly illustrated manuscripts of the text, among the treasures of Indian painting, were produced in large numbers for the occasion.

Through this yearly re-telling the community renews its memory of Mahavira and its commitment to the ascetic and ethical ideals he embodied. In canon the Kalpa Sutra belongs to the Svetambara scriptures and is not accorded the same authority by the Digambara tradition, which rejects the surviving Svetambara canon. Scholars value it both as an important witness to early Jain hagiography and monastic history and as a still-living scripture whose annual recitation binds the Svetambara community together.
