The Threshold of the Kongo Cosmogram

Kalunga is a foundational concept in Kongo cosmology, most often described as the boundary or threshold, frequently identified with the ocean or a great body of water, that separates the world of the living from the world of the dead and ancestors, functioning simultaneously as a barrier, a point of crossing, and in some interpretations a great cosmic force or divinity in its own right rather than only a geographic line.

Kalunga occupies a central place within the Kongo cosmogram, the four-moment sun symbol, dikenga, that maps birth, life, death and rebirth as a continuous cycle around this central dividing line, making Kalunga less a single bounded realm in the way most other entries here are and more a structural principle running through the whole of Kongo cosmological thought, a threshold that every being crosses moving from one state of existence to the next rather than a destination one simply arrives at and remains within. This concept travelled with enslaved Kongo people across the Atlantic and left a deep and well documented mark on African diaspora religion in the Americas, particularly within Kongo-influenced strands of Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Brazilian tradition.
