Practiced in Secret Because It Had to Be

Vodou's history in Haiti is inseparable from the conditions of slavery under which it took shape: French colonial law banned African religious practice outright, and enslaved people maintained their traditions by presenting them alongside, and partly hidden behind, the imagery of Catholic saints they were required to be baptized into, so that Vodou's lwa came to be paired with specific Catholic saints whose images and feast days provided cover for observances the colonial authorities would otherwise have suppressed. That history of enforced secrecy did not end with independence; Haitian Vodou remained legally restricted and socially stigmatized in Haiti for long periods afterward, and Kanzo's own seclusion and internal secrecy reflect a tradition that has had real, sustained reasons across centuries to keep its initiatory content within the community of the initiated rather than open to outside observation. This history is also why outside ethnographic writing about Vodou initiation is a genuinely contested subject rather than a settled body of neutral scholarship: some anthropologists and travel writers have published detailed accounts of initiatory content obtained without full standing within the tradition, and Vodou practitioners and scholars sympathetic to the tradition have pushed back on such accounts as unauthorized disclosure of restricted material rather than legitimate ethnography, a dispute this entry deliberately declines to resolve by reproducing the disputed content itself. Who may become a houngan or manbo, and what specifically qualifies them, remains a matter internal Vodou lineages and their own initiated elders govern.
