Karmic Debt Numbers

The Karmic Debt numbers are a distinctive doctrine of modern numerology: certain numbers, conventionally 13, 14, 16 and 19, are held to carry a special burden when they appear as the two-digit total behind a core number, a debt from past misuse of energy that the present life must work to repay. Each is given a particular lesson: sixteen the collapse of the ego and painful renewal, nineteen the misuse of power and the need to learn independence without selfishness, and so on.

The idea grafts a notion of karma, borrowed from Indian religious thought and mediated through the Theosophical movement of the late nineteenth century, onto the Western numerological system, and it is entirely modern, neither the Pythagorean nor the Chaldean sources of antiquity know anything of karmic debt numbers. The doctrine belongs to twentieth-century numerology, elaborated especially in the later decades, and its vocabulary of debt and past-life obligation reflects the New Age synthesis rather than any classical numerology.
