The Dispute That Nearly Split the Sangha Early

The Khandhaka's account of the Second Buddhist Council is treated by historians as some of the most reliable historical material anywhere in the early Buddhist canon, since its ten disputed points, including whether monks could accept gold and silver donations and certain details of how the uposatha ceremony could be conducted, describe a concrete, plausible institutional disagreement rather than legendary or doctrinal material, and most scholars accept that some form of this council genuinely occurred roughly a century after the Buddha's death, making it one of the few episodes in the earliest layer of Buddhist textual history with reasonably firm historical anchoring. That council's resolution, and the underlying tensions it only partially settled, is widely regarded by scholars as an early precursor to the broader splits into separate ordination lineages and doctrinal schools that would eventually produce, centuries later, the divide between Theravada and the various Mahayana traditions, even though the immediate Second Council dispute itself concerned monastic discipline rather than the philosophical questions that later separated the traditions more decisively.

The Khandhaka's ordination procedures, refined and elaborated across these two sections, remain in active liturgical use in Theravada monasteries today essentially unchanged in their core structure, making this one of the oldest continuously performed formal religious ceremonies still practiced according to its original canonical script.
